Journalism Next: Chapter 5 “Going Mobile”

February 21st, 2012 · No Comments · Briggs, Comm 361, Pat Carroll

Chapter Six of Briggs’ Journalism Next focuses on the impact of mobile devices and smartphones on the journalism business and how all the tools that a journalist needs are at his or her fingertips with this new-age technology.

With the many applications and features of a smartphone, such as Twitter, Facebook, video/photo cameras, Tumblr and other outlets, journalists have the ability to create, edit and share content almost instantly.

This form of mobile journalism eliminates gatekeepers and allows anyone who has the means to share news the power to do so. However, with the vast array of content being shared, it opens up the floodgate for false information from unreliable sources.

Now more than ever, the importance of journalistic credibility is the difference between maintaining readers and being an unreliable source. If you don’t provide legitimate information, no one will read you and you will be out of a job in a flash in the competitive business of journalism.

The new face of the NBA has finally joined the social network created by fellow Harvard alum Mark Zuckerberg.

New York Knicks point guard and worldwide phenomenon Jeremy Lin recently made a Facebook profile.

But how is this a story?

Well, pretty much everything Lin does these days is news-worthy. You can’t turn on ESPN or any cable network for that matter without some reference of Lin in the broadcast. He has captivated the sporting world and his popularity is only just beginning.

Since he was named a starter by coach Mike D’Antoni, Lin’s Twitter handle, @JLin7 has been mentioned 215,408 times and his name has been mentioned over 2.5 million times.

The question is will Lin’s fame last or will it fade over time?

Chapter 4: The new age of microblogging

February 14th, 2012 · No Comments · Briggs, Comm 361, Pat Carroll

Just over ten years ago, journalism was constituted to those in the newspaper, television and print industry. Online journalism was in its infancy and most Americans got there news from the latter outlets.

Today, instead of picking up a morning paper or turning on the local news, a resounding number of Americans wake up with a cup of coffee and their Facebook news feeds and Twitter timelines. News outlets, like USA Today, CNN and Fox News all share content using Facebook and Twitter to reach a wider audience.

Social media also allows anyone to tell a story and report on an event using video, photos and text. Here is a prime example of this modern reporting:

Another video shows Daniel Morales using Twitter to find his long lost daughter, after being separated for 11 years. Just another example of how Twitter connects people worldwide.
