Briggs Chapter 10 & 11: Building Your Audience and Search Engine Optimization

March 8th, 2012 · No Comments · Briggs, Comm 361, Pat Carroll

The tenth and eleventh chapters of Journalism Next specifically mention the importance of creating a sense of community with your readers/audience along with increasing your readership through Search Engine Optimization.

Here are some ways that journalists can grow their readership and interact with their audience:

  • Comments
  • Conversational writing
  • Mailbag

Allowing users to comment gives your readers the ability to share their opinions and feedback on a given post, statement, or video that you publish. This way you can get a consensus on what your readers enjoy about your writing and what they feel you should do better.

While you may have a large audience of readers, the more the merrier. Through tagging, linking and tracking you can appear more in searches through Google, Bing and Yahoo.

Here are a list of ways to increase your viewership and SEO:

  • Use specific tags. By using generic keywords, you will not show up among the more prominent websites.
  • Link keywords in your posts. Linking words to websites with heavy traffic will cause your site to get more views.
  • Keep track of where your readers come from. This will give you a better idea of what your readers are interested in.

Workshop #2: Photoshop Part I

March 8th, 2012 · No Comments · Comm 361, Pat Carroll

Before taking the Photoshop workshop, I was somewhat familiar with the software but then again everything I knew I had learned by tinkering around with the interface. However, after the session, I had a much better grasp of the photography program.

In the two hour session, I learned a variety of helpful skills including:

  • Cropping
  • Color editing
  • Rotating photos
  • Scaling
  • Zoom
  • Tables

The session was effective because the instructor was able to help me one-on-one due to the small size of the class (one other student). Overall, the experience was enlightening and I have a better understanding of CS Photoshop.

Workshop #1: Microsoft Word 2010 Part I

March 8th, 2012 · No Comments · Comm 361, Pat Carroll

When we think about Microsoft Word as a writing tool, we consider it a simple and boring platform that we have used ever since we were in elementary school. But when I took the expert workshop on Microsoft Word 2010, I learned that there are many intricacies about the software that I was unaware of before the class.

During the session, I learned some new skills:

  • Find and replace
  • Header modification
  • Photo editing

The find and replace feature allows users to employ symbols and characters to represent longer words or even sentences. This feature would come in handy when writing a lengthy novel that uses the author name, book title, or main character’s name throughout the piece.

With header modification, I learned that you can save custom headers for future use and insert them wherever you desire in a document. Also, with photo editing, I learned how to scale photos easily and how to set them to the foreground or background of the document along with increasing a photo’s transparency.

Overall, the workshop was a helpful experience and with the new skills I’ve learned I will be able to operate in Word much more simply now.
