Chapter Six of Briggs’ Journalism Next focuses on the impact of mobile devices and smartphones on the journalism business and how all the tools that a journalist needs are at his or her fingertips with this new-age technology.
With the many applications and features of a smartphone, such as Twitter, Facebook, video/photo cameras, Tumblr and other outlets, journalists have the ability to create, edit and share content almost instantly.
This form of mobile journalism eliminates gatekeepers and allows anyone who has the means to share news the power to do so. However, with the vast array of content being shared, it opens up the floodgate for false information from unreliable sources.
Now more than ever, the importance of journalistic credibility is the difference between maintaining readers and being an unreliable source. If you don’t provide legitimate information, no one will read you and you will be out of a job in a flash in the competitive business of journalism.
